WEEK TWO 9 – 16 August
A Journey through Jazz
Mike Hall director
A Journey Through Jazz promises to unravel some of the apparent mysteries of jazz improvisation in the context of practising and performing some eight bespoke ensemble pieces in a concert to be given at the end of the week.
We will rehearse each of the pieces and then workshop appropriate approaches to creating an improvisation within them. Detailed notes will be provided but the aim will always be to use a simple pathway and a supportive musical environment to achieve our performance.
“What a teacher, it was great to explore new ways to improvise”

Newcomers to jazz will find a sympathetic and supportive environment in which to take their first steps, while more experienced students will be provided with more challenging material and ideas to extend their existing abilities.
Participants should have a reasonable command of their instrument, although no formal qualifications are required. We look to attract a variety of instrumental colours: woodwinds, saxophones, brass, strings and of course, guitars, bass, keyboard and drums. It is stressed that no previous experience of improvisation is necessary and we particularly welcome musicians with classical skills wishing to explore jazz for the first time.
